Pet peeve

February 10, 2012 1 comment

I have a pet peeve, working in an anonymous office building in cube city, anonymous corp does its best to be green.
So unless you have an exception the computers go to sleep after hours and lights get turned off.
But worker bees are also asked to be conscious and turn off the cube lights.
Most of us do.
And here is where my pet peeve comes in. I can’t stand people who leave their cube lights and other accessories on when they are away for the day!
Have a colleague, who has a digital phone frame with pictures of his kid changing every few seconds or something running all the time, powered in to the electric grid.
Even after hours and on weekends and when he is away.
Bothers me no end!
Dude can you fucking unplug that thing when you leave for the day?
I know, we waste a lot of energy, those set top boxes at home are a good example and are power hogs! How bad? here!
In 2010, these set-top boxes ate up nearly 27 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, or 168 kilowatt-hours per set-top device. In total, that’s enough electricity to power the entire consumption of Maryland for a year, costing consumers more than $3 billion annually.
I know, digital photo frames are not quite in the same class, but every bit counts doesn’t it?
And I switch off my set top box at home since tv watching is only on weekends, we turn it on as needed.
I just wish people thought of the small ways and small things that we can do stop cooking this planet we call home.
Take a look at NASA’s 30 second animation of the past 130 years of global temperature change NASA 130 yrs of global temperature change, and tell me that you are not worried.

Looking back…

My first thought at my new digs.
I figured I wanted a place for my thoughts, without being judged by those who know me in real life.
That whole having people who know you in real life reading your blog can get you in trouble.
Trust me I know, and I had a hard time getting out of it.
I wrote a poem about not having my own child, personal and raw!
Touched a few people I think.
I deleted it because I respect the person who asked me to delete it and for the sake of peace. But it defeated the whole “my corner” place that I wanted my blog to be.
So this one is it. No names no pictures, just my thoughts.
Been quite the year…eventful in many ways.
So what was this year like?

  • An addition to the family, one that had been in the works for a while.
  • The addition meant, that there was no way in hell that I was going to be able to do a 4 hour daily commute and also help raise a child.
  • This meant a job change, which luckily went smoothly for me, just to a new location. For J it was a new beginning, one that she was looking for.
  • The big stressor, the house want on the mkt in a crappy real estate mkt. Sold to the first buyer, for a loss. Ouch! Our realtor who sold the place just wrote to say that the market is even worse now than it was before, so I guess we could really have been up shit creek
  • My dad in his 90s who had been in poor health passed away, 3 days before closing on the sale.
  • Had to help pack things to a temp storage since we had not found a house yet, then fly for the final rites for my dad.
  • It was a challenging year, but I know a lot of people who are hurting much more.
So I thank whatever higher power maybe at work, “the flying spaghetti monster” or whatever else does this.
In all of this is the joy that K brings it my life. She is 5 now, will be quite a young woman. She already has a strong personality, and J is like that too. Those two are gonna butt heads later. 🙂
    But more on that later.
Hopefully this year will be a bit quieter.

    New beginnings.. or not!

So here goes.. another attempt at blogging. The other blog kinda fell off, it had too much of a tie in with my real world identity, and some how although that did not bother me so much, it seemed to hold me back.  Not to mention I did not have a good mobile platform to blog from. So maybe this time will be different.

I found FB too distracting, I want to just be able to fire off my posts, random brain farts or whatever and not have to worry about having to “like” what someone said or feel like I have to respond. Not that I don’t like to, I do. But it is a huge distraction with demands of work and family and other competing interests.

Let us see how this goes.
